Electronic Commerce Group

After nine months of operation, the Electronic Commerce Group (ECG) has continued to expand its membership and activities. We were pleased with the excellent response to the three sessions at the 2001 NAPM Annual International Purchasing Conference. If you were unable to attend, the slides for all three presentations are now posted on our Web site at www.e-commerceonline.org and can be read or downloaded.

Another new activity of our Group may be found on the NAPM Web site at www.napm.org, in the Discussion Forums section of the Members Only area. Over the past few weeks, we have established a separate section related to electronic commerce. We have already had a couple of lively discussions about some issues in electronic commerce. We welcome questions and comments from everyone.

ECG has now set its sights on our first-ever Fall Roundtable. The date for the roundtable has been established as October 5, 2001, and the location is set for Boston. At this time, we are planning four roundtables focusing on current topics of major interest to electronic commerce supply managers, namely (1) the successful use of auctions, (2) how to develop useful electronic reports that can be used by management, (3) building electronic catalog content at a reasonable price, and (4) selecting an electronic commerce solution without losing your mind. Depending on the feedback from the fall conference, ECG plans to hold other roundtables throughout the United States over the coming year. Although everyone is welcome to attend, the electronic brochure announcing the Fall Roundtable will be sent only to ECG members. Nonmembers may find the brochure by visiting our Web site at www.e-commerceonline.org.

Another major activity of ECG will be the July launch of our quarterly newsletter. This newsletter will feature articles from ECG Group Chair Brian G. Long, Ph.D., C.P.M., and ECG Legal Issues Chair Ernest Gabbard, C.P.M. Again, the newsletter will be advertised to ECG members, but nonmembers may locate the newsletter on our Web page.

The entire focus of the Electronic Commerce Group is to provide guidance and interpretation to the supply management profession regarding the major issues of electronic commerce. We hope to provide a steady stream of information and viewpoints about a wide variety of electronic commerce topics.
