How can supply managers transform their thinking and behavior to deliver maximum value to the organization? This comprehensive program provides a framework for building a supply team that creates value and delivers measurable value.
Manage and Mitigate Risk
Supply managers have two primary objectives: to manage and mitigate risk and to identify and maximize opportunities. Supply's contribution is determined by how well these objectives are achieved. It is through integration and alignment with end customers, internal business partners and external suppliers that supply managers achieve these objectives.
All supply decisions affect and are affected by the wider community. How can supply managers minimize risks and enjoy the full benefits of socially responsible management of the supply chain? Dr. Marianne Jennings leads a morning session on supply's contribution to corporate social responsibility.
Part of the dilemma of supply chain management is internal alignment. Strategies, goals and activities must be aligned both horizontally (across functions and business processes) and vertically (up and down the hierarchical ranks of the organization). Linking strategy and performance measurement and management are critical to a successful alignment. Dr. Angelo Kinicki leads a day of discussion and interactive exercises including developing a supply strategy map, writing SMART goals and executing the balanced scorecard approach.
Supply base and supplier relationship management is another critical responsibility of supply managers. Optimizing the contribution of suppliers often means going beyond standard supplier management approaches to create and develop suppliers. Dr. Mike Leenders' presentation includes interactive exercises related to supplier creation and development and the impact on your bottomline.
Apply What You Learn
Developing and implementing supply strategies is the heart of the game for supply managers. Dr. Anna Flynn facilitates a supply strategy simulation that provides participants an opportunity to develop and implement a supply strategy and to see the impact on sales and profit performance. Played in a friendly yet competitive environment, the simulation allows hands-on practice and illustrates the complexity of decision making in a global economy. The goal is to explore the implications of forecasting, recognize the value of market and company intelligence, and balance inventory and pricing considerations in an environment of uncertainty. Experience firsthand the opportunities and challenges of creating and living with the results of your supply strategies.
Now in its 38th year, the ISM Supply Management Program evolves along with the tasks, duties and responsibilities of those in supply management. This program continues to be an essential ingredient in the careers of many supply managers. Value-Packed Program Schedule
This program leverages the power of the individual and the group through efficient and effective use of time. These intensive four and a half days include individual work, small-group discussion and strategy development, presentations, facilitated large-group discussions and informal networking time. Each day provides a concentrated focus on selected critical areas of supply's contribution. We carefully selected our instructors based on their content expertise as well as their skills in presenting concepts, leading discussions and facilitating analysis and decision making. The number of sessions is limited to allow more time for hands-on activities, facilitated discussion and peer interaction. Using small-group discussions, case analyses, presentations and interactive exercises, the instructors share ideas, concepts and real-world experiences in a thought-provoking way. Plan on fresh-air breaks throughout the day and group luncheons to allow networking and downtime. Don't come to this program expecting talking heads — each session is designed to make the subject matter come alive. Roll up your sleeves and get ready to work on real-world challenges.
Who Should Attend
This program is designed for leaders of change in supply management. Those in decision-making positions related to purchasing, procurement, suppliers, supply management or supply chain management will most benefit from this program. Typically, participants have responsibilities for planning, managing or directing supply functions or processes in alignment with organizational goals and objectives. Historically, this program has benefited participants with titles such as vice president or director of purchasing or supply management, supply or supply chain manager, commodity or materials manager, sourcing team leader and the like.
Learning Environment and Program Location
Monday through Thursday, sessions take place at the national headquarters of the Institute for Supply Management™. Participants stay at the Embassy Suites Hotel, Tempe (www.embassysuites.com), located six miles from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and four miles from the Institute for Supply Management™ headquarters. A scheduled shuttle is provided to the classroom at the ISM headquarters for the program on Monday through Thursday. The half-day session on Friday is at the Embassy Suites to accommodate travel schedules.
ISM is located in the beautiful Arizona State University Research Park, which includes several lakes and walking/jogging paths. Sessions are in the ISM classroom away from the usual distractions at hotels. This location allows participants to meet some of the key staff members of ISM and CAPS Research, as well as a chance to tour the facility. Each day begins with a continental breakfast in the classroom. At lunchtime, enjoy a stroll around the lakes or relax on the patio before the afternoon sessions. Evening events are scheduled on Tuesday and Thursday.
