How do I reaccredit my A.P.P. if the program ends after February 28, 2007?

ISM will continue to accept reaccreditation applications beyond February 28, 2007. ISM has no plans to discontinue reaccreditation.

A.P.P./C.P.M./CPSM Timeline

Individuals seeking reaccreditation must accumulate at least 42 hours of continuing education since the issue date of their current certificate. At least 28 hours must be educational in nature. Up to 14 hours may be earned in the professional contributions category. Continuing education can be earned in the following categories:

For how long is my A.P.P. accreditation valid?

Five years. Unless you have earned a Lifetime A.P.P. - in which case, you would never need to reaccredit.

What are the A.P.P. Lifetime Accreditation requirements?

A.P.P.s applying for Lifetime accreditation must have passed modules 1 and 2 of the C.P.M. Exam and document at least 18 years of fulltime professional (non-clerical, nonsupport) work experience. Résumés do not meet the documentation requirements for experience. Supply management can be a secondary component of the applicant’s job. Applicants must submit documentation in English and of CEHs earned.

A.P.P.s meeting Lifetime accreditation criteria in a current certificate period need only earn the total number of hours through the year in which they meet the requirements for Lifetime accreditation, regardless of when they apply for the designation. Applicants for Lifetime accreditation should apply as soon as they are eligible.

Applicants must submit documentation of Continuing Education Hours earned, determined on a prorated basis, since their last certificate date.

Years Since Accreditation Began CEHs Needed for Lifetime A.P.P.
1 year or less 8 Continuing Education Hours (CEHs)
1 but less than 2 years 17 Continuing Education Hours (CEHs)
2 but less than 3 years 25 Continuing Education Hours (CEHs)
3 but less than 4 years 34 Continuing Education Hours (CEHs)
4 but less than 5 years 42 Continuing Education Hours (CEHs)

How do I keep my C.P.M. and/or A.P.P. valid if they expire in 5 years?

The process for maintaining your certification is called 'recertification' or 'reaccreditation'. It requires a completed application with backup documentation showing that you have met the specific program requirements.

In order to recertify your C.P.M. you will need to document 84 continuing education hours (CEHs) earned during your current certification period.

In order to reaccredit your A.P.P. you will need to earn 42 continuing education hours earned during your current accreditation period.

If you have both the C.P.M. and A.P.P. you can use the same CEHs toward both programs' recertification requirements provided that the education took place during the current certification period for both.

We recommend that you download the appropriate Recertification or Reaccreditation application from our Web site to review all of the requirements: www.ism.ws/Certification/Onlineforms.cfm.

My C.P.M. and/or A.P.P. has expired — what do I do now?

ISM provides each candidate with a one (1) year grace period to recertify or reaccredit their designation without penalty. During this grace period the individual is no longer a C.P.M. or A.P.P. ISM expects that candidates in their grace period will cease using their designation until they are recertified or reaccredited by ISM. This grace period does not lengthen your certification period - using this grace period will not change your next expiration date. Your expiration date will remain five years from when you were certified or recertified.

If it has been more than one year, or if you do not postmark your recertification application within one year of the expiration date, you will be required to retake the modules of the exam. For the A.P.P. you will need to retake Modules 1 and 2. For the C.P.M. you will need to take Modules 1, 2, 3 and 4. ISM does not make exceptions to this policy.

Although ISM currently sends reminder postcards approximately 1 year and 6 months prior to a candidate’s expiration date, it is the responsibility of each candidate to know when their certification expires. The expiration date for your certification is clearly printed on the bottom left of the certificate you received when you were certified or accredited.

How do I earn Continuing Education Hours (CEHs)?

There are several ways to earn CEHs. Once way is to retake a module or modules of the C.P.M. Exam. C.P.M. candidates can retake Module 3 and/or 4 of the Exam, A.P.P. candidates can retake any one of the four modules. Each module successfully passed will be worth 42 CEHs.

You can also receive CEHs for college courses, attending or presenting public seminars or conferences, business-related training provided by your employer, correspondence courses, publishing an article in an established purchasing or trade magazine or a refereed journal, or even earning a certification from an ISM Allied Association. Applicable topics include, supply management, purchasing, accounting, finance, or other business related courses. All educational events must be at least one hour in length to qualify toward recertification or reaccreditation. ISM does not need to pre-approve your courses. Each candidate is required to track their own continuing education hours earned.

ISM does not require that the continuing education be taken through ISM. However, ISM does offer numerous ways to earn CEHs (ISM-sponsored seminars, conferences, online courses, and more). We recommend that you download the appropriate Recertification or Reaccreditation application from our Web site to review all of the requirements: www.ism.ws/Certification/Onlineforms.cfm.

ISM administers the C.P.M. and A.P.P. programs for the profession and the public. Membership in ISM is not required. Questions about ISM membership should be directed to ISM Customer Service at 800/888-6276 or 480/752-6276, extension 401.
