PRESIDENT’S LETTER:

New Name, Professionalism, Participation and Lunch

How does “NAPM Miami Valley” sound? During the October dinner meeting, a vote was taken on the board’s recommendation for the name change. Our membership resides from Lima to Middletown, consequently “NAPM Miami Valley” is a better representation of who we are as an affiliate. The paperwork will be submitted and our new name will begin appearing on our correspondence soon.

Professionalism means different things to various people. In the purchasing/supply chain profession we strive to meet the highest professional standards. We can achieve this through ethical behavior, C.P.M./A.P.P. certification, training, education and networking. It is no coincidence that the NAPM Miami Valley is continuously striving to present programs that meet these professional needs. The implementation of our own website and marketing program will propel our affiliate’s abilities to expand our services to our membership. Stay tuned for more information on what is coming soon to the NAPM Miami Valley membership

As we continue to look at expanding the various training, educational and networking opportunities one question continues to plague us. Will you participate? There is a tried and true formula: the higher the participation at these events, the more and the higher the quality of the programs we can offer. Also, the more fun they become. We have a vast membership representing numerous organizations that provides great networking opportunities among great people. Sure sounds like fun - participate and find out.

Your next opportunity to participate at a dinner meeting will be on November 21st at the Holiday Inn North (Wagner Ford Road) for LUNCH. Our joint NAPM/APICS meeting is happening and the topic is Supply Chain Management I’ll be there - but, don’t let that stop you from attending! I hope to see you at lunch and at future NAPM Miami Valley activities.

Gary L. Abney, C.P.M.

OCTOBER DINNER MEETING SPEAKER HIGHLIGHTS:

PHILOSOPHY OF CONTRACTING
by JOHN BATTLES

First and foremost, read the contract carefully. If you cannot control an aspect of the contract, make sure you are protected. Ask questions. Does it pass the “What’s up with that test?”. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

The Statue of Fraud states that any contract over $500 should be in writing, however, verbal contracts can be found to be valid. Review your purchase order terms and conditions often. The allocation of risk should be to those who control that aspect. Make sure the parties are identified, that those signing have the authority to bind the parties. Include general performance terms, warranty of performance, ownership if intellectual property, limitation of liability, confidentiality, and indemnification. Other topics that may need covered are insurance, payment terms (discounts or late fees), service levels, volume commitments, failure to reach commitment, early or cancellation terms, remedies (incentives for early performance and penalties for nonperformance), limitation of time for a claim to be raised, audit clause, return of company material supplied, travel expenses, and a reasonable not to exceed clause.

COMMUNICATION WITH MEMBERSHIP:
Electronic Newsletter to Begin January 2003

The Newsletter will be transitioning from a paper copy to electronic in January 2003. We plan on a paper mailing and an e-mail copy being sent in January. In order to prepare for this transition, we will be contacting members by phone to update our records and make sure we have your correct e-mail address. This change will not only save the affiliate money but will allow us to provide information in a more timely manner.

DINNERS AT THE CROWNE:

Except for the November program (joint meeting with APICS), which is to be held at the Holiday Inn North (Wagner Ford at I-75) during lunch, Dinner Meetings will be held downtown at the Crowne Plaza Dayton, 33 E. Fifth St., Dayton (phone (937) 224-0800) beginning at 6:00PM. NAPM will provide validation stickers at each meeting, which will allow you free parking in the parking garage (Transportation Center) that is adjacent to the Crowne Plaza. Access the covered pedestrian walkway across Jefferson St. as the best means to get directly to the Crowne Plaza from the parking garage.

Meetings will generally be located at the Restaurant Level, which will allow you a nice glimpse of the downtown skyline. The dinner cost is $20.00; you may pay by cash, check, or by credit card. Forward your dinner reservations to Amy Solko of the Affiliate Societies by Monday (Tuesday mornings at the very latest) of the week of the Dinner Meetings. Contact the Affiliate Societies via (937) 224-8513, ext. 3, or by fax: 937-224-0644, or e-mail (address: asc@dnaco.net).

INCREASED PAYMENT OPTIONS:
In addition to paying your membership dues by credit card, you will now be able to pay for dinner programs, Satellite SemInars, and other Affiliate events by credit card. We will accept any of the following cards: VISA, MasterCard, American Express, and Diners Club. These transactions will be processed through national headquarters of NAPM and will take an average of one week to get posted to your account. A receipt will be given to you to show payment. · Approximately half are from manufacturing organizations, 30 percent are from the services sector, and 20 percent work for public-sector organizations.
· Approximately half are buyers or purchasing agents, 30 percent are supply managers, directors, or vice presidents, and 20 percent hold other positions within the organization.

LET’S CROSS PATHS ON THE NAPM FIELD:
Consider giving a gift of your time and showcasing of your talent to enhance the value and level of service to the membership community. Our role is to serve you better and provide superior level of quality. Your board cannot tackle this alone; we need the collective support of the entire affiliate to develop game plans that make a difference on the NAPM playing field. We understand that demands at work and at home and other commitments are important and take priority. However, we ask you to seriously give this thought, and make a conscious effort to join our team and help in the long-distance run for your local affiliate. Feel free to contact any board member to discuss this in more detail.

WEB SITE ADDRESS UPDATE
The new website (www.ism.ws) is very similar to the old NAPM website. I hope you have visited the new site and have updated the address in your records. If you visit the NAPM Dayton/ Springfield website directly you will need to update our address too. Our new direct local affiliate website address is www.ism.ws/sites/dayton_springfield.
