Membership Recruitment Update

ISM's effort to recruit and retain members continues with the help of Marketing General Inc. Since we enlisted their help last November, close to 1,000 new members have joined ISM. A continued focus will be on getting lapsed members to renew, as well as refining the process to eliminate recruitment mailings to existing members.

NEW Supply Management Handbook Available in July!

The Supply Management Handbook provides an A to Z encyclopedia of how to understand and perform best management practices; however, the subject matter in the new version has been greatly expanded to reflect all of supply management.

The field is in a continuous period of expansion. While many of the traditional components remain as part of the basic core, each year new practices come to light in new areas with successes that translate into positive organizational performance.

The handbook begins by taking a look forward at where eight thought-leaders see the field of today and where further opportunities lie for the profession over the next five years. The four chapters that follow start with insights into the Institute for Supply Management™'s scan of the profession in its expansion from buying, to purchasing, to supply. The next two chapters contain insights from leading consulting firms in the field with their observations on the strategic directions and opportunities for supply. The handbook also contains a synthesis of what the nature of the leading roles and jobs are as they are evolving today. Based on several forums conducted by the A.T. Kearney Center for Strategic Supply Leadership at ISM, the study is focused on defining the nature of the field's leadership three to five years into the future.

ISM Gears Up for 2006-07 Satellite Seminar Series

It's time to get your affiliate downlink site registered for the upcoming program year. The programs planned for the coming months are:

  • Thursday, October 12, 2006 — Finance for the Supply Professional
  • Thursday, February 8, 2007 — Critical Business Skills for Effective Supply Chain Leaders
  • Thursday, April 19, 2007 — The Business Case for Diversity in a Social Responsibility Context
  • Thursday, June 7, 2007 — Project Management for Supply Professionals

You can obtain program descriptions on the ISM Web site at www.ism.ws/education/UpcomingSatelliteSeminars.cfm. As it becomes available, other pertinent information will be posted in this Web area, including the program outlines and panelist biographies.

ISM offers three ways that your affiliate can take part in satellite seminar programming:

  1. Downlink the live broadcast, which enables your group to take full advantage of the program by interacting live with the panel via fax, e-mail or telephone. ISM provides satellite seminars to affiliate organizations at no charge. All you need is a downlink location with a steerable satellite dish that can receive C-band satellite transmissions. The first step is to register your site at www.ism.ws/education/SatSemRegistration.cfm. At the appropriate times throughout the year, satellite coordinates and other information is e-mailed to the sites that are registered.
  2. Purchase a DVD and schedule a viewing to fit your affiliate's schedule. The four-hour programs on DVD are priced at $99 for ISM members and include a copy of the corresponding program handbook. This option enables your affiliate to build a permanent library of the programs. The DVDs must be ordered within three weeks following a broadcast and will be shipped to you approximately eight weeks after the program. Watch for the link to the order blank on the Web page for each program.
  3. Borrow the videos of past satellite seminars from the Affiliate Video Loan Library. The request form is in the Members Only area of the ISM Web site at www.ism.ws/tools/AffiliateLoanLibraryForm.cfm. Programs produced after October 2004 are in DVD format, while earlier satellite seminars are in VHS format.

Questions on ISM Satellite Seminars may be e-mailed to satsems@ism.ws or to Valerie Gryniewicz at vgryniewicz@ism.ws.

NEW ISM Ethics Survey Report Posted on Web Site

In late 2005, ISM's Ethical Standards Committee conducted a survey to assess the drivers and barriers to ethical behavior in organizations. The survey received more than 1,200 responses from supply managers and their colleagues. The results of that study are now posted in PDF format in the Research area of the ISM Social Responsibility Web site at www.ism.ws/SR/content.cfm?ItemNumber=4769&navItemNumber=5507.

We invite you to visit this Web site to view the Ethics Survey Report as well as three other reports that are posted in the Research area:

  1. The Baseline Study released by ISM in April 2004 in conjunction with the launch of the ISM Social Responsibility initiative. This study reports the results of a large-scale survey of supply managers that measured the baseline level of activity in their organizations relating to ISM's seven Principles of Social Responsibility.
  2. Purchasing's Contribution to the Socially Responsible Management of the Supply Chain, a focus study published by CAPS Research containing the results of research conducted in 2000 to identify the activities encompassed within purchasing social responsibility (PSR), as well as the factors that drive PSR, barriers and ways to overcome them, and the outcomes of PSR.
  3. Revitalizing the Supplier Diversity Value Proposition Through Supply Chain Effectiveness, published in 2003 by the Telecom Supplier Diversity Task Force, which offers 21 supply chain recommendations to improve supplier diversity programs.

On Your Marks ... Get Set ... ISM'S Affiliate Recruitment Challenge Is Underway!

ISM's latest membership recruitment campaign is underway - and your affiliate can win one of two educational seminars or $1,500 of educational resource materials as a result.

The Affiliate Recruitment Challenge (ARC) runs from March 1-November 30, 2006, and will award the affiliate with the highest percentage net increase (excluding transfers) a two-day ISM seminar or $1,500 (member retail price) of ISM educational resource materials.

In addition, all affiliates that increase their membership by 15 percent or more during the contest will be entered into a drawing where one of those affiliates will be selected at random to receive one free two-day ISM educational seminar.

The seminars can be held wherever the winning affiliates choose, or used as a gift to current members or as a way to show potential members the benefits of joining. For more information, visit the ISM Web site at www.ism.ws.

Good luck!
