The C.P.M. and A.P.P. programs continued on the path of growth and increased recognition thanks to the efforts of NAPM affiliates, organizations supporting certification efforts, and professionals willing to spend the time and effort to study and test. The NAPM marketing organization has created a formal plan to carry the C.P.M. and A.P.P. programs into the new millennium. NAPM is communicating with more potential C.P.M. and A.P.P. candidates than any other time in its history. And, NAPM affiliates and many colleges and universities continue to offer hundreds of review courses to help people prepare for the exam.
C.P.M. and A.P.P. News
Lifetime Certification or Lifetime Accreditation means recertifying or reaccrediting for the last time. The applicant must meet one of two options to obtain Lifetime Certification or Lifetime Accreditation:
New Job Analysis to Update the C.P.M. Examination
In the interest of maintaining excellence in its certification program, NAPM is currently embarking on a multinational, comprehensive job analysis of the purchasing and supply management function. The purpose of this job analysis, which began in November 1997, is to provide a basis for updating and revising the Certified Purchasing Manager (C.P.M.) and Accredited Purchasing Practitioner (A.P.P.) programs, to ensure their relevance and validity throughout the wide spectrum of the purchasing profession, and to obtain important, up-to-date information about the present state and future direction of the purchasing function in a variety of industries, and organization sizes and types.
C.P.M. 1998-99 Goal Report
The Certification Committee and the Professional Development Committee worked collectively to establish goals for the upcoming C.P.M. program year. The committees jointly agreed the goal of new C.P.M.s added each year is central to the health and long-term success of the C.P.M. program. The goal for the March 1998 to April 1999 C.P.M. program year is 1,670 new C.P.M.s. The goals of each affiliate are tracked allowing for follow up with those affiliates to identify and share success stories. Certificates are awarded, by the district director, to those affiliates meeting their established goals.
Global Update: NAPM's 1997-98 International Efforts
In 1998 NAPM solidified several international relationships. Country-specific C.P.M. exams have been introduced in Ireland, India, and Australia. Contracts are in place with the Irish Institute of Purchasing and Materials Management (IIPMM), the Indian Institute of Materials Management (IIMM), and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT). Each country is actively marketing the NAPM C.P.M. and A.P.P. programs and has created review courses to help candidates pass the examination. A similar arrangement is currently being negotiated in South Africa.
Due to the sunset of the NAPM National Committee Chairs, many of the Districts have reorganized their committee structure.
