    Most purchasing professionals generally agree that the acceptance of significant gratuities is inappropriate and should be discouraged. Managers need effective methods of monitoring and controlling such activities. This study examined the impact of certain individual and organizationally controlled variables on the acceptance of gratuities. Consequently, the study was able to identify some approaches that can be used by management for control purposes.

    A review of the literature suggests that unethical practices in buyer-supplier relationships are related to two broad categories of antecedents: (1) internal, organizational characteristics and (2) external, interorganizational characteristics. The author examines how these two sets of factors affect unethical behavior that may occur in the relationships of U.S. purchasing managers and their non-U.S. suppliers, through a combination of focus group and individual interviews and a mail survey that employs a dyadic methodology.

    Socially responsible purchasing continues to be an area of interest from both managerial and scholarly perspectives. Socially responsible purchasing has implications for all elements of the supply chain, including suppliers, employees and customers, among others. This article empirically examines purchasing social responsibility (PSR) across a large sample of manufacturing and service organizations. It is a replication of earlier work on PSR within consumer products industries. The article models PSR across the following five constructs: diversity, the environment, human rights, philanthropy and community, and safety. Findings and specific managerial implications are presented.

    This article presents the key findings of a study cosponsored by NAPM that surveyed NAPM members in an effort to (1) identify the key ethical issues facing the profession of purchasing and materials management today, and (2) determine the extent to which purchasing professionals find various factors to be helpful or to present challenges to their efforts to act ethically. A comparison of the findings for C.P.M.s and non-C.P.M.s indicates that the two groups of NAPM members have very similar views regarding the key ethical issues and the helps and challenges encountered by the profession. The implications of the key findings for business and the profession are discussed.

    The American post-Watergate political climate necessitated the prohibition of bribes and gifts to foreign officials as a method of influencing business and government decisions. The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) (1977) was passed to help define appropriate ethical and legal behavior, limiting the payment of fees, gifts, or bribes to low ranking government officials, and mandating financial reporting of such expenditures. The issue of moral imperialism, forcing U.S. standards on others, remains unresolved. Few countries have passed similar legislation. Case law has strengthened the FCPA, allowing competitors to sue for lost business if bribery swayed a significant decision.
