(Tempe, Arizona) Purchasing professionals across the globe are making certification a priority in their country. After several years of development, the Indian Institute of Materials Management (IIMM) has awarded its first Certified Purchasing Manager (C.P.M.) and Accredited Purchasing Practitioner (A.P.P.) certificates in India.
In February of this year, the National Association of Purchasing Management (NAPM) and IIMM signed a licensing agreement to offer Indian versions of the C.P.M. and A.P.P. exams for Indian purchasing and supply management professionals. After conducting the first Indian version of the C.P.M. exam in February, four students received C.P.M. certification, and two students received A.P.P. accreditation.
NAPM was originally asked by IIMM to help develop certification programs for the country, similar to the programs offered by NAPM since 1974. It was determined by both groups that the programs would be most beneficial if they were tailored to the Indian professionals. Part of NAPM's mission is to educate, develop, and advance the purchasing and supply management profession. Helping IIMM develop certification programs was the perfect opportunity for carrying out a portion of NAPM's goals, according to Scott Sturzl, C.P.M., Vice President, Certification. "It is really a complimentary situation. India gives us the opportunity to provide our knowledge and experiences to further the profession, while in return, NAPM is able to interact with purchasing professionals across the globe, and learn from their practices and experiences as well. The relationship helps strengthen the profession overall."
IIMM was founded in 1975 and is the only professionally-managed body in India which provides continuing opportunities in materials management. With the certification programs, the organization hopes to secure a wider recognition and promote the importance of efficient materials management in commercial and industrial undertakings.
