FOR RELEASE: October 14, 2009
(TEMPE, Ariz.) October 14, 2009 — A Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences has been awarded to an advisory board member of the Journal of Supply Chain Management (JSCM), the Institute for Supply Management™'s (ISM) quarterly publication for supply chain management scholars and researchers. Oliver E. Williamson, Ph.D., is the first Journal advisory board member to win a Nobel Prize. Williamson is Edgar F. Kaiser Professor Emeritus of Business, Economics and Law at the University of California, Berkeley. He shares the prize with Indiana University Professor Elinor Ostrom, Ph.D.
The Journal of Supply Chain Management is in its 45th year of publication. According to Co-Editor-in-Chief Craig R. Carter, Ph.D., ISM repositioned JSCM almost three years ago to be the journal of choice among supply chain management scholars. "As part of that repositioning effort, the editors created world-class advisory, associate editor and review boards," Carter says. "The awarding of the Nobel Prize in Economics to Oliver Williamson is a very tangible indicator of the thought-leaders who comprise these boards."
Adds Carter, "The fact that Oliver Williamson has been awarded the highest honor in the field will also help to extend the impact of JSCM internationally, since his transaction cost economics theory is used by scholars worldwide."
In addition to his advisory role, Williamson has been a featured contributor to JSCM. His invited article, Outsourcing: Transaction Cost Economics and Supply Chain Management, appeared in the Journal's second issue of 2008 and can be downloaded free of charge at the bottom of the Journal's Web site at http://blackwellpublishing.com/jscm.
