Feature Article: Powerful Persuasion

Persuasion is an important life skill, and for the senior executive, it is even more vital. Though it can have a negative connotation if taken too far into what would be considered manipulative territory, there is nothing inherently wrong with persuasion — it allows others to get on board with your ideas and understand your perspective, and also helps you accomplish your business goals faster.

Most leaders are adept at the basics of persuasion and understand the importance of logical and emotional appeals. However, regardless of the strength of a leader's argument, a lack of connection to one's listener can lead to failure.

Poorly executed attempts at persuasion can come across as manipulation, leading others to feel used, and result in more resistance to achieving your goals. Of course, threats, pressure, dominance, bias and so on are not effective means of persuasion. These behaviors are overly forceful, so it is important to practice persuasive skills that don't result in such actions.

ISM Announces 2012 Academic Research Support Program Grants

Institute for Supply Management™ (ISM), with the support of the ISM Board of Directors, has awarded several grants under the ISM Academic Research Support Program. The program's goal is to increase academic leadership in supply management and help more advanced students enter the profession. At its May 2012 meeting, the ISM Board approved the ISM Educational Resources Committee's recommendations for Academic Research Support Program grants as follows:

Four grants of US$6,000 each were awarded in the Phase 1: ISM Dissertation Research Grants:

  • David C. Hall is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Management at Clemson University. Hall's dissertation proposal is titled, The Decision to Outsource Production: A Behavioral Study of Relative Supplier Advantage, Monitoring, Bandwagon Pressure and Individual Characteristics.

  • Jurriaan de Jong is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Management Science, Fisher College of Business, at The Ohio State University. His dissertation proposal is titled, The Influence of Power in the Medical Equipment Supply Chain.

  • Lorena D. Mathien is a Ph.D. candidate in the Operations Management and Strategy Department at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Mathien's dissertation proposal is titled, An Empirical Investigation of the Antecedents and Validity of Five Theory Bases of Logistics Outsourcing Decisions.

  • Serhiy Y. (Sergey) Ponomarov is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Marketing and Logistics at the University of Tennessee. His dissertation proposal is titled, Antecedents and Consequences of Supply Chain Resilience: A Dynamic Capabilities Perspective.

The Phase 2: Professional Research Development Grant of US$10,000 was awarded to Arash Azadegan, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Management, College of Business at New Mexico State University, for his research titled, Biasing and De-Biasing of Global Sourcing Decisions: A Multi-Method Analysis.

The Phase 3: Professional Research and Collaboration Grant of US$9,000 was awarded to Judith M. Whipple, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Supply Chain Management at the The Eli Broad Graduate School of Management, Michigan State University. Whipple's research is titled, Examining and Understanding the Persuasion Process between Industrial Buyers and Suppliers.

The ISM Board also approved an award of US$19,200 to Lisa M. Ellram, Ph.D., C.P.M., CMA, for Year Two of her research under the Academic Research Support Program Phase 4: The ISM Distinguished Leadership Grant. Dr. Ellram's research is titled, A Research Agenda for Understanding Services Purchasing. She is the Rees Distinguished Professor of Distribution, Department of Marketing, at the Farmer School of Business at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio.

Each of the four phases of ISM's Academic Research Support Program has specific selection criteria as well as distinct application and evaluation procedures. General eligibility requirements, as well as specific application procedures for each grant, are available online. The deadline for grant applications is January 31 each year.

ISM Now Accepting Nominations for Top Supply Management Honor

Institute for Supply Management™ (ISM) is accepting nominations for the J. Shipman Gold Medal Award. The award honors a single individual for a lifetime of contributions to the profession. The Shipman Medal is the highest honor within ISM's power to confer. Nomination deadline is January 31, 2013.

The J. Shipman Gold Medal Award was created by the Purchasing Management Association of New York in 1931, and is presented to those individuals whose modest, unselfish, sincere and persistent efforts have aided the advancement of the supply management profession. Medalists are a class of professionals who are innovators, community leaders, mentors and teachers and model the same attributes as Johnson Shipman, for whom the honor is named.

Term of the Day

Today's ISM Term of the Day is: PEER-TO-PEER (P2P).

Definition: The interaction by which computers and other network devices communicate with each other as equals, or peers, rather than relying on a central server.

A different Term of the Day is posted on the ISM Home Page each day — seven days a week. The Term of the Day is taken from the ISM Glossary of Key Supply Management Terms.

ISM members can access the online Members Only Glossary which includes terms from the private, public, and various industry sectors, and from a wide variety of sources. The Glossary can be browsed alphabetically, or searched by keyword.
