|March Manufacturing ISM Report On Business®: PMI at 59.6%
Economic activity in the manufacturing sector expanded in March for the eighth consecutive month, and the overall economy grew for the 11th consecutive month, say the nation's supply executives in the latest Manufacturing ISM Report On Business®.
The report was issued today by Norbert J. Ore, CPSM, C.P.M., chair of the Institute for Supply Management™ Manufacturing Business Survey Committee. "The manufacturing sector grew for the eighth consecutive month during March. The rate of growth as indicated by the PMI is the fastest since July 2004. Both new orders and production rose above 60 percent this month, closing the first quarter with significant momentum going forward. Although the Employment Index decreased 1 percentage point to 55.1 percent from February's reading of 56.1 percent, signs for employment in the sector continue to improve as the index registered a 10 percent month-over-month improvement, indicating that manufacturers are continuing to fill vacancies. The Inventories Index provided a surprise as it indicated growth for the first time following 46 months of liquidation — perhaps signaling manufacturers' willingness to increase inventories based on expected levels of activity."

|First Cohort Graduates, Celebrates ISM Approved Master's
Eleven supply management professionals are the first to complete the ISM Approved Master of Science in Supply Chain Management (MS-SCM), granted by the University of San Diego (USD) School of Business Administration. Graduating students delivered project presentations, showing significant cost savings and process improvements, on March 18-19, 2010, followed by a graduation ceremony on March 20, 2010, held at USD's Douglas F. Manchester Executive Conference Center. Graduates come from the following companies: Biogen Idec; The Boeing Company; Milestone IT Solutions, Inc.; ModusLink Global Solutions, Inc.; Northrop Grumman Corporation; Salt River Project; United Launch Alliance, LLC.; and WD-40 Company.
The ISM Approved MS-SCM program combines state-of-the-art online learning with face-to-face instruction over 26 months. Students spend 11 days each year on the USD campus working intensively with faculty and their co-learners. The March 2010 graduates embarked on their studies in February 2008, as part of a larger cohort that began a two-phase program.
"These graduates are in a class by themselves, as the first students in the first graduate-level program to receive ISM approval," says ISM CEO Paul Novak, CPSM, C.P.M., A.P.P. "The interdisciplinary nature of the specialized master's degree rewards professionals for their commitment to lifelong learning and allows them to forge strong professional networks — both of which are major components to career success and advancement."
MS-SCM Program Director and Professor Simon Croom, Ph.D., underlies the value of the program to companies. "Throughout the program, our graduates develop the capabilities that help their firms to reduce costs, bring products to market more quickly and develop new systems to compete successfully in today's global economy," Croom says.
Students have the option to complete Phase I of the program, achieving a Graduate Certificate in Supply Chain Management. Most students chose to matriculate into Phase II to complete the ISM Approved MS-SCM. The 17th cohort of the ISM Approved program began on USD's campus earlier this month. The next group will begin September 15, 2010.
The ISM Approved MS-SCM is the only U.S. degree that is accredited by the Chartered Institute for Purchasing and Supply (CIPS).

Employers: How Does It Work?
ISM offers all Conference participants the opportunity to submit their résumés for consideration. Participating employers will have the opportunity to review submitted résumés and meet with top candidates during the Conference.
The ISM Conference hosts more than 2,000 supply management professionals each year. Global attendees are from both the manufacturing and non-manufacturing sectors:
- 90 percent of attendees have three or more years of experience in the supply profession.
- 25 percent of attendees have at least one professional credential.
- 50 percent of attendees have a bachelor's degree and/or some graduate school experience.
- 29 percent of ISM members have a graduate degree.

Today's ISM Term of the Day is: OPEN-TO-BUY.
Definition: An aggregate inventory control technique in which authorizations to purchase are made without commitment to specific suppliers. These are often stated as commodity in dollars by time period.
A different Term of the Day is posted on the ISM Home Page (www.ism.ws) each day — seven days a week. The Term of the Day is taken from the ISM Glossary of Key Supply Management Terms.
