ISM R. Gene Richter Awards Finalists Announced

Supply management departments at 10 companies are among the finalists in Institute for Supply Management™'s (ISM) fifth annual ISM R. Gene Richter Awards for Innovation and Leadership in Supply Management. Finalists in the 2010 competition were selected from applications received in an online submission process held from July 1, 2009 to September 18, 2009. The sixth annual ISM R. Gene Richter Awards for Excellence in Supply Management call for entries will open in July 2010.

ISM will announce winners from among the 2010 finalists in April. Representatives from winning organizations will present their stories of leadership and innovative thinking in San Diego at ISM's 95th Annual International Supply Management Conference and Educational Exhibit, to be held April 25-28, 2010.

Named after supply management leader and innovator R. Gene Richter, the ISM R. Gene Richter Awards for Leadership and Innovation in Supply Management were established in 2004 to recognize innovative supply organizations that through strong leadership have dramatically increased their contribution to organizational success. Five entry categories include: Organization/Structure; People; Process; Sustainability; and Technology.

The 2010 Richter Corporate Award Finalists are:

Top Students Showcase Talents in Case Competition

Twenty students representing five universities participated in a case competition held during the 7th Annual Black Executive Supply Management Summit in San Diego. Presented by Institute for Supply Management™ (ISM), the three-day program, titled "Fueling the Recovery: Fueling the Pipeline," brought together senior and middle managers to focus on the power of relationships. Student teams presented cases on the afternoon of February 2, 2010.

"The case competition is an ideal way to showcase the next generation of supply management talent," says Shelley Stewart, Jr., ISM Board Chair and senior vice president, operational excellence and CPO, Tyco International. "The experience provides students with a place to begin building professional networks as well as hear from practitioners on how to establish themselves in the supply management profession."

Results of the 2010 student case competition are:

  • Florida A&M University
    1st Place | $5,000 scholarship award

  • Clark Atlanta University

Global management consultant A.T. Kearney provided the 2010 case study, which was judged by three senior supply management executives: David Groomes, vice president, supply chain management at U.S. Facilities, Inc.; G Sean Williams, C.P.M., associate director, global facilities sourcing at Bristol-Myers Squibb; and Leslie Parker, principal at A.T. Kearney.

Term of the Day

Today's ISM Term of the Day is: BACKHAUL.

Definition: Term used to indicate a transport vehicle's return from delivery point to point of origin. A backhaul may include a full or partial load. If the return trip is made with no load, it is called deadheading.

A different Term of the Day is posted on the ISM Home Page ( each day — seven days a week. The Term of the Day is taken from the ISM Glossary of Key Supply Management Terms.
