Get CEHs by Attending ISM Satellite Seminars
Individuals who are working on their recertification can earn four Continuing Education Hours (CEHs) for each satellite seminar they attend. Even if your affiliate does not downlink the live broadcasts, you can borrow DVDs from past satellite broadcasts, show them as an affiliate event and award the points! You can obtain a copy of the Achievement Award form on the ISM Web site. From the ISM Home Page at www.ism.ws, select Members Only, Affiliate Resources, Affiliate Management Tools, then select Continuing Education Hours (CEHs). There is a link on that page for the Achievement Award Form.
If you choose to show DVDs from the Affiliate Video Loan Library, the online request form is also available in the Members Only area. From the ISM Home Page at www.ism.ws, select Members Only, Affiliate Resources, Affiliate Management Tools, then select the link for Video Loan Library.
Information on upcoming satellite seminar programs is posted on the ISM Web site as it becomes available. To access information on future satellite seminars, from the ISM Home Page at www.ism.ws, select Education — Seminars, Conferences and then select Satellite Seminars and then Upcoming Satellite Seminars.
ISM's next satellite seminar is scheduled for April 23, 2009 on the topic "Preparing to Negotiate Onshore and Offshore." Watch for more details on this program in future issues of NewsLine.

Coming Soon — ISM's Inaugural Commercial Contest
Calling all ISM members — show your creative side in ISM's first Commercial Contest — your chance to write, produce and direct your very own 30- to 60-second commercial. The winner will receive an iPod and an expense-paid trip (domestic airfare, Conference registration and hotel) to ISM's 94th Annual International Supply Management Conference and Educational Exhibit in Charlotte, North Carolina, May 3-6, 2009.

ISM's Environment Web Page Provides New Links to Resources
Although it's only one of the nine ISM Sustainability and Social Responsibility principles, the principle of Environment and all it encompasses often comes to mind when we think about sustainability. The Sustainability and Social Responsibility area of the ISM Web site includes a page dedicated to each of the principles, and the Environment page has recently undergone a facelift.
We invite you to explore the updated Environment Web page, in addition to the Web pages for the other ISM Principles of Sustainability and Social Responsibility: Community, Diversity and Inclusion — Supply Base; Diversity and Inclusion — Work Force; Ethics; Financial Responsibility; Human Rights; Health and Safety; and Sustainability.
To access the Environment page, choose Ethics and Social Responsibility from the list at the left side of the ISM Home Page at www.ism.ws, then select Environment from the list of the nine principles under the page heading.
At the top of the Environment page, you will find the description, including seven contextual points associated with the Environment principle. The remainder of the page is devoted to Environment resource areas divided into seven categories — General Resources; Carbon, Climate & Energy; Green Purchasing; Green Facilities; Global Environment; Legislation & Regulations, and Waste & Recycling — each containing a wealth of links to Web sites for specific information.
New links added to the Environment page provide:
- A glossary of environmental terms
- Information on climate change
- U.S. government information on environmentally preferable purchasing and green purchasing
- Resources for green meetings, hotels and buildings — just to name a few

ISM Automatic Membership Renewal Program

ISM and NBTA Summit on Travel and Meetings: Supply Management's Critical Role
Mark your calendar and begin making plans today to attend the first-ever ISM-NBTA (National Business Travel Association) Summit on Travel & Meetings: Supply Management's Critical Role. This unique event will be held January 27-28, 2009 at the Westin Charlotte in Charlotte, North Carolina.
This is an outstanding opportunity for experienced professionals with oversight responsibilities for business travel and meeting spend within supply management operations. The conference will focus on the challenges associated with the complex task of managing travel and meetings — the largest category of indirect spend. As more and more companies place their travel and meetings operations with their supply management organization, it's important that the professionals charged with directing travel and meeting spend policy decisions have the tools necessary to advance their company's capabilities in this area. This conference will help meet that need.

Attention Affiliates — An Important Change Has Been Made to ISM's Semi-Annual Dues Billing Process
Beginning with the March 2009 semi-annual dues billing, ISM will no longer be mailing a dues turnaround roster to affiliates. Instead, the affiliate mail designations and the affiliate membership chairs will receive an e-mail from ISM with instructions on how to pull the complete semi-annual dues billing roster from the affiliate online reporting tool. This new process will provide affiliates with more real-time data. We will also e-mail all final invoices and rosters to the affiliate mail designations and the treasurers.
The 2009 NARTS Program Has Been Cancelled
After discussions with various academic leaders, the 20th Annual North American Research and Teaching Symposium on Purchasing and Supply Chain Management (NARTS), scheduled for March 12-13, 2009, has been cancelled. The Institute for Supply Management™ (ISM) apologizes for any inconvenience this cancellation may have created.
The economic challenges experienced globally over the last several months have caused very real challenges for academia and business alike. Feedback from the business and academic communities indicates that budgetary constraints exist at this time. In making this difficult decision, ISM re-evaluated the program's expenses and took into consideration the program's financial impact upon all organization's involved.
We are pleased to report that we received numerous quality papers for this event. ISM would like to thank those educators who submitted papers in addition to many of their colleagues who may have given input for their completion. We also appreciate those individuals who reviewed submitted papers and provided essential feedback regarding the submitted papers. These submissions represent the importance the academic and business community place on supply chain management — and makes the decision to cancel the event even more difficult.
Each year, NARTS surfaces unique and innovative papers from academic professionals across the globe. Although we anticipate that the 2010 program will proceed as scheduled, ISM will notify all concerned parties regarding the status of the event at a later date.

ISM Hospitality Suite Policy
Hospitality suites are to have a business emphasis as opposed to social in order to stay within the educational purpose of the International Supply Management Conference of the Institute for Supply Management™. Hours of operation should not conflict with other Conference activities.
ISM has no desire to discourage informal get-togethers during periods of time when there are no scheduled Conference events. While it may be difficult to discern the exact difference between business and socially oriented suites, or informal get-togethers, it is intended that such activities not leave the association open to criticism. Ethical considerations are and remain of prime concern to the Institute for Supply Management™.

The Institute for Supply Management™ annually honors an outstanding individual in the profession with the J. Shipman Gold Medal Award.
Johnson Shipman was a pioneer member of the New York affiliate of the National Association of Purchasing Agents, well-known for giving liberally of his time and counsel.
The J. Shipman Gold Medal Award, established 77 years ago to commemorate the contributions of this modest, retiring man known for his vision, intellect and influence on important issues, has been awarded annually to those individuals whose persistent efforts have aided the advancement of supply management.
