  • A Social Network Analysis of the Journal of Supply Chain Management: Knowledge Generation, Knowledge Diffusion and Thought Leadership, Vol. 43, No. 2 (Spring 2007), p. 15.

The authors conduct a citation analysis of the Journal of Supply Chain Management over its first 40 years of publication, with the objectives of better understanding the sources that supply management scholars have drawn upon to generate research appearing in the Journal. Social network analysis is introduced and used to better understand how research that has been published in the Journal has been diffused across universities, and to identify university thought leaders. The authors provide future research directions based on additional, potential applications of social network analysis.

This article reports the findings of a comprehensive forecasting study conducted among a wide variety of purchasing personnel in the United States. The primary objectives of the research were to determine the degree of forecast utilization in purchasing, identify the types of firms utilizing purchasing forecasts, describe the items most commonly forecasted, and identify the forecasting methods used. The findings suggest that while most purchasing departments placed a relatively high level of importance on forecasting, judgment-based forecasting techniques were heavily relied upon and methods of forecast improvement were not widely employed. Additionally, forecasting by purchasing departments was found to be a relatively recent phenomenon. The findings also revealed that purchasing departments may not be taking full advantage of the many forecasting and forecast improvement techniques available.

As distance learning and the Internet have become popular, teaching courses over the Internet will become common. Preparing and teaching a distance learning class over the Internet is considerably different than teaching in the traditional classroom. This article presents a case study in developing and conducting a purchasing class over the Internet. It describes how class information, lectures, and class discussions were conveyed to the student on a Web site and how homework and individual correspondence were transmitted by e-mail. Additionally, the differences between traditional classrooms and Internet-based courses are discussed, and general information on distance learning is presented.
