Katrina and Rita. While these two female names seem harmless enough, their hurricane namesakes proved quite the opposite. Slamming into Louisiana as a Category 3 storm on August 29, 2005, Katrina became one of the most destructive, costly and deadly natural disasters in the history of the United States. Then, not even one month later, Hurricane Rita blew into the same region, bringing more destruction to the Gulf states.
