Irena Penrose, purchasing lead of Global Media Central of Golden, Colorado, just received another call regarding low inventory, "Irena, we're all out of shipping cartons for Windows 95 again." The shipping carton shortage of Windows 95 was typical. This last-minute notification to purchasing creates problems for assembly, purchasing, and the carton suppliers. Penrose is anxious to handle the whole situation in a more systematic fashion and wonders if moving to a JIT mode might work. Penrose is well aware of the Just-In-Time (JIT) system and its potential contribution. However, she knows that moving to JIT requires top management support, coordination from both the assembly and distribution departments, and supplier commitment.
