Purchasing and supply management professionals, from both public and private sector organizations, engage the services of various individuals to provide independent advice, methods, services, and practices for the resolution of specific business issues or problems. These independent contractors (ICs), support and/or complement the organizations' core staff (full-time employees) by applying their specialized knowledge. However, it's important to clearly differentiate between individuals classified as employees and those classified as ICs, and understand criteria for classifying ICs, laws, and regulations affecting the engagement of ICs, and the creation of effective contracts that can withstand federal, state, or internal audits.
