August Non-Manufacturing ISM Report On Business®: Business Activity at 65%

Business activity in the non-manufacturing sector increased in August 2005, say the nation's purchasing and supply executives in the latest Non-Manufacturing ISM Report On Business®.

The report was issued today by Ralph G. Kauffman, Ph.D., C.P.M., chair of the Institute for Supply Management™ Non-Manufacturing Business Survey Committee and coordinator of the Supply Chain Management Program, University of Houston-Downtown. "Non-manufacturing business activity increased for the 29th consecutive month in August," Kauffman said. He added, "Business Activity increased at a faster rate in August than in July. New Orders, Employment and Inventories also increased at faster rates. Many members' comments expressed concern about the continuing increase in oil and gas prices and its impact on the prices of other items and on budgets. The overall indication is continued economic growth in the non-manufacturing sector in August at a faster rate of increase than in July."

Latest JPMorgan Global PMI: Global Report on Manufacturing

Growth of Global Manufacturing Output and New Orders Slowed in August. Sharp Upsurge in Input Cost Inflation as World Oil Price Hit Nominal Record.

At 52.2 in August, down from July's nine-month high of 53.4, the Global Manufacturing PMI — a composite index produced by JPMorgan and NTC in association with ISM and IFPSM — signalled an easing in the rate of growth of the global manufacturing economy. Although down sharply on that recorded in the same period of 2004, the level of the PMI remained slightly above its long-run average.

Of the twenty national PMI surveys for which August data were available, all except four (Germany, Italy, Australia and Austria) recorded an improvement in overall operating conditions. However, twelve registered a weaker trend in operating performance compared to one month ago, with the levels of the US, the Eurozone, Japan and China PMIs all falling since July.
