|Feature Article: Are You Prepared for a Pandemic?
Imagine that a flu pandemic hits the United States and approximately 20 percent to 40 percent of your work force is ill in waves lasting two to six weeks. Those employees able to come to work must practice social distancing by staying far apart from coworkers, and emergency medical supplies such as face masks and hand sanitizers must be immediately available. One of your critical suppliers is hit so hard by the pandemic it shuts down its operations. Is your supply management organization ready to handle all of this?
Health officials say it is not a matter of "if" but "when" there will be a severe pandemic outbreak. The 2009 H1N1 flu pandemic, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates infected about 61 million people from April 2009 through April 10, 2010, was not as severe as expected. A flu pandemic is an outbreak caused by a new human flu virus that spreads around the world. Because it is a new virus, few people have immunity, and it can spread easily from person to person. Influenza also is unpredictable and can occur in waves, lasting for a year or more.
In today's global economy, businesses shouldn't ignore the need for pandemic planning, because a flu that starts in a remote part of the world can spread quickly with far-reaching ripple effects.

Today's ISM Term of the Day is: SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT LIFE-CYCLE.
Definition: A methodology used to develop, maintain and replace information systems. Typical phases in the SDLC are: analysis; design; development; integration and testing; and implementation and maintenance.
A different Term of the Day is posted on the ISM Home Page each day — seven days a week. The Term of the Day is taken from the ISM Glossary of Key Supply Management Terms.
ISM members can access the online Members Only Glossary which includes terms from the private, public, and various industry sectors, and from a wide variety of sources. The Glossary can be browsed alphabetically, or searched by keyword.

To receive Just in ETime:
- First, log into the ISM website using your username and password.
- If you have never created a profile/account on the ISM website — or if you don't remember if you have an account — click "Log In" in the upper right-hand corner of the ISM Home Page.
- Under "Log In," you will find a "Did you forget your username and password?" link. Click that link, and enter your e-mail address. (If you have more than one e-mail address, try each one.)
- If you do have an account, the ISM system will e-mail you your username and password.
- If, however, the system tells you the e-mail address was not found in our records, you will want to create a new account. Do this by clicking the "My Account" tab in the upper right-hand corner of the ISM website, followed by "Create New Account."
- Once you've created your new account, proceed to the "Manage Newsletters" link, which is also found under the "My Account" tab.
- Finally, select Just in ETime from the list of available newsletters and click the "Update Subscription" button at the bottom of the page.
