This Month in Inside Supply Management® Magazine

Have you checked out the latest issue of Inside Supply Management® magazine? The June/July 2011 issue is full of useful information, including the following articles:

  • A Career of Progressive Approaches and Leadership
"In supply management, you don't work alone." This is the present-day truth and future vision for Shelley Stewart, Jr., CPSM, and J. Shipman Gold Medal Award recipient. Institute for Supply Management™ (ISM) presents the J. Shipman Gold Medal Award annually to an individual who displays modest, unselfish, sincere and persistent efforts for the advancement of purchasing and supply management. As the 81st recipient of the Shipman Medal, Stewart joined an elite group of supply management luminaries when he accepted the award in May in Orlando, Florida.

  • Ahead of the Curve
Ten students, representing seven leading universities, are recipients of 2011 R. Gene Richter Scholarships. Winners receive tuition assistance of up to US$5,000 and the benefits of an executive mentorship, which pairs the student with an established executive mentor and a junior mentor who is a former Richter scholar. Winners were recognized on May 15, 2011 at an awards dinner held during Institute for Supply Management™'s 96th Annual International Supply Management Conference and Educational Exhibit in Orlando, Florida.

  • Reaching for New Ideas
Innovation sparks growth and change in today's competitive business environment. It is hard to imagine an organization that is not continually trying to improve and update its products or services to stay ahead of the curve. As companies outsource and offshore their manufacturing processes and services, it is only natural to expect them to also reach out to their suppliers for innovation. While concerns exist, outsourcing innovation is becoming more common because innovation is key to revenue generation. The issue for supply management professionals then becomes how to effectively establish, manage and monitor innovation outsourcing.

Feature Article: Is Your Supply Chain Ready for Stagflation?

The United States and the majority of the world economy have experienced a recession that is considered the deepest since World War II. Although indicators seem to show that the bottom has been reached, a clear upward direction of the economy is not visible.

For our analysis, we have followed ISM's PMI index very carefully since the onset of the recession in 2008. The Manufacturing ISM Report On Business® released on June 1, 2011 (containing May 2011 data) showed a PMI of 53.5 percent (the first reading below 60 percent in 2011), and indicated growth in economic activity in the manufacturing sector for the past 22 months, as well as overall economic growth for the 24th consecutive month.

However, some negative details cannot be overlooked. Customers' inventories are still — for 26 consecutive months — too low. The May Report On Business® stated, "Slower growth in new orders and production are the primary contributors to this month's lower PMI reading. Manufacturing employment continues to show good momentum for the year, as the Employment Index registered 58.2 percent, which is 4.5 percentage points lower than the 62.7 percent reported in April. Manufacturers continue to experience significant cost pressures from commodities and other inputs."

The question emanating from these observations is: Are we heading for inflation? Reports and comments from major economic institutions provide a confusing picture. While the National Inflation Association believes the United States is certainly headed toward hyperinflation, the U.S. Federal Reserve believes otherwise thus far.

How could a scenario of inflation, hyperinflation or even stagflation develop?

No-Cost Webinar Next Week: "Lexmark Uses Cloud Collaboration to Deliver 99 Percent Spend Compliance"

When it comes to streamlining internal processes, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems are great. But when you're transacting with your many suppliers and managing those relationships, business commerce happens outside your four walls, in the space between companies.

In that space, most companies struggle with:

  • No visibility into order, invoice, or payment status
  • Low catalog use; more maverick spending
  • Wasted staff time on managing exceptions and fielding supplier calls
  • Inability to adapt business processes for different spend categories

But you can fix all that.

Attendees will hear from Matt Montgomery of Lexmark International as he shares how they leveraged cloud-based solutions to extend the power of their ERP systems and achieve:

  • 99% spend compliance
  • 75% reduction in supplier record requirements
  • 60% faster set up of new online supplier catalogs
  • 30% improvement in invoice and payment processing

And Matt did all this with limited IT and business resources. You can, too.

Featured Speakers:

  • Matt Montgomery
    Manager, Corporate Supply Base Management
    Lexmark International, Inc.

  • John Lark
    Sr. Solutions Marketing Manager
