This Month in Inside Supply Management® Magazine

Have you checked out the latest issue of Inside Supply Management® magazine? The January 2010 issue is full of useful information, including the following articles:

  • Soaring To New Collaborative Heights
Two years ago, Grace Puma arrived at United Airlines with a major objective: She was responsible for transforming the sourcing organization into a strategic function. How did she organize this transformation and continue to see savings results, even during the ongoing economic pinch of the past few years? The answer: alignment with strategic suppliers through collaborative development of the relationship.

  • Shades of the New Normal
Two years ago, many organizations were ill-prepared for the tsunami of financial, economic and geopolitical downswings that ultimately culminated in a global recession. To cope with these shifts, organizations developed alternative sourcing strategies (reining in suppliers closer to home), adjusted supplier contracts (seeking earlier payments) and altered employment strategies (doing more with much less). As the United States and the world emerge from the recession, will the reactionary strategies of the previous two years become permanent operating procedure — the "new normal"?

  • Executive Access to the Chair: Executive Sponsorship
Promoting executive sponsorship for your procurement activities helps drive success in a number of ways. This is particularly true when you are sourcing certain categories or commodities, especially indirect. In a recession (and even when there is no recession), enlisting executive sponsorship is a strong opportunity to gain real commitment and alignment from the organization to support indirect sourcing. Indirect categories — travel, cafeteria and facility services, among others — tend to be more near and dear than most to the executives whose support is being sought.

  • Know Your Water Footprint
This year, supply management executives in some industries will be facing regulatory measures regarding greenhouse-gas reduction, and many more will make a wide variety of sustainability initiatives a central concern well ahead of government mandates. While carbon and energy saving issues are top-of-mind, it's clear that the same attention is not always being given to water sustainability.
