April Manufacturing ISM Report On Business®: PMI at 48.6%

Economic activity in the manufacturing sector failed to grow in April, while the overall economy grew for the 78th consecutive month, say the nation's supply executives in the latest Manufacturing ISM Report On Business®.

The report was issued today by Norbert J. Ore, C.P.M., chair of the Institute for Supply Management™ Manufacturing Business Survey Committee. "The manufacturing sector failed to grow in April as the PMI fell below 50 percent for the third consecutive month. Manufacturers are in a situation where both new orders and production are slowly declining, but prices continue to rise at highly inflationary rates. Bright spots this month are the growth in the Backlog of Orders Index after six consecutive months of decline, continued strength in new export orders and a reduction in customers' inventories."

Principles and Standards of Ethical Supply Management Conduct

According to ISM's Principles and Standards of Ethical Supply Management Conduct, what types of conduct should be avoided to prevent a "conflict of interest?"

Conduct To Be Avoided

  • Engaging in outside business or employment that may encroach upon the supply professional's primary responsibility of loyalty to the goals of the employer.

  • Engaging in improper personal business with, or employment by, an organization that competes with, or is a supplier to, the employer. Examples include but are not limited to:

    • Owning or leasing any property with knowledge that the employer has an active or potential interest therein.

    • Lending money to, or borrowing money from, any customer or supplier.

    • Using the organization's name (unless authorized) to lend weight or prestige to sponsorship of a political party or cause, or endorsing the product or service of another organization.
