June Manufacturing ISM Report On Business®: PMI at 56%

Economic activity in the manufacturing sector expanded in June for the fifth consecutive month, while the overall economy grew for the 68th consecutive month, say the nation's supply executives in the latest Manufacturing ISM Report On Business®.

The report was issued today by Norbert J. Ore, C.P.M., chair of the Institute for Supply Management™ Manufacturing Business Survey Committee. "Following a weak first quarter, the manufacturing sector rebounded in a strong fashion during the second quarter. In June, manufacturing expanded at its fastest pace since April 2006 when the PMI Index registered 56.9. This performance appears sustainable in the third quarter due to the current strength in New Orders and Production."

ISM Discussion Forums

Most supply managers have a support network — a group of people they call, e-mail, or talk to if they have a question or need a second opinion. But what happens if the network can't address a question? Where else can supply managers go for answers? The ISM Web site's Discussion Forums provide a way for supply managers to broaden their networks. On the discussion forum, users can pose their questions to supply managers all over the world, in every industry, and in every size of organization.

What's There?

The discussion forums are divided by topic. A few of the current forum topics include:

  • Credentials Discussion Forum
  • Diversity Forum
  • ERP Discussion Forum
  • Industry- and Job-Specific Forum
  • Service Purchasing Forum
  • Supply Management Forum
  • Technology Forum

From there, each forum is divided into threads - subtopics of the forum. A thread begins as someone poses a question or comment and is formed as responses (or messages) that apply to the subtopic are submitted. Each message is organized chronologically so future readers can follow the discussion of an issue.

Using the Discussion Forum

The discussion forum may be used to pose new questions, but users may also browse the threads looking for answers to questions or just to find out what issues their colleagues and peers are facing. Users may also share their knowledge to address other users' questions.

Example of a current posting in the discussion forums:

ForumTitle: Supply Management Forum
Thread Title: Reporting Cost Savings
Post Date: 6/18/07
Thread Comment: I am curious about how other companies report cost savings. Do you only include net of positive and negative PPV? Do you only report favorable PPV? Do you include cost avoidance? Any and all input is welcomed.

Supply managers can use the ISM Discussion Forums to broaden their networks and knowledge base, to learn about their peers' paramount issues, and to share their knowledge and experience with others.

If you would like to respond to the above forum thread, or post a thread of your own click here.

The Business Case for a Social Responsibility Initiative

Commitment to socially responsible behavior is good business — in both the public and private sectors. Often payback can be quantified in financial terms. Socially responsible behavior may even ensure that an enterprise will avoid difficult or embarrassing scrutiny.

Business leaders, including supply management professionals, are dealing with an environment that is more complex and demanding than at any time in the past. Some may see a solid commitment to social responsibility "as just one more layer of complexity." It is not.

The ISM Committee on Social Responsibility has created a set of business case documents designed to help an enterprise work through the process for establishing a social responsibility program. You may find the documents useful as you work to develop or enhance a social responsibility program where you work.

How Can I Verify an Individual's C.P.M. or A.P.P. Status?

Individuals wishing to verify an individuals C.P.M. or A.P.P. certification status can use ISM's Credentials Verification.

You are able to search by individual's last name and C.P.M.s only, A.P.P.s only or either C.P.M. and A.P.P. There's also an option to view all individuals certified or accredited within the last 30 days.

Please remember there may be instances where a candidate's information may not be up-to-date due to the time factor in processing applications and recertifications.
