Keynote Address/Monday's Luncheon with Gail J. McGovern

Get a front row seat into the turnaround implemented at the American Red Cross, all orchestrated by Gail J. McGovern, President and CEO of this US$3.3 billion organization. Along with overseeing res-ponses to several high-profile disasters, McGovern initiated steps to invigorate the organization, includ-ing eliminating its operating deficit and streamlining its operations. Discover how her strategy to use a for-profit mindset in this non-profit institution resulted in the elimination of a $209 million annual operating deficit to where now the Red Cross operates on a balanced budget. McGovern discusses using state of the art supply chain strategies to mitigate risk. Learn how approaches such as JIT, VMI and strategic sourcing became even more valuable in the turnaround. Explore how the American Red Cross stays nimble in order to respond to the nation's demand for emergency response and blood services. McGovern's career includes faculty member at the Harvard Business School as well as president of Fidelity Personal Investments, a unit of Fidelity Investments. She was also executive vice president for the Consumer Markets Division at AT&T, responsible for AT&T's US$26 billion residential long-distance service and largest business unit. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Johns Hopkins University and an MBA from Columbia University, and is currently a member of the board of trustees of Johns Hopkins University and on the board of directors of DTE Energy. Keynote Address/Wednesday's Closing Brunch with the Capitol Steps

The Lighter Side of Politics

Thirty years ago, the Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them. Although not all of the current members of the Steps are former Capitol Hill staffers, taken together the performers have worked in a total of eighteen Congressional offices and represent 62 years of collective House and Senate staff experience.

The Capitol Steps have recorded over 30 albums and they've been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC, and PBS, and can be heard on National Public Radio during their Politics Takes a Holiday specials. They have performed for the last 5 Presidents (6, if you include Hillary). The only complaints the Steps seem to get are from politicians and personalities who are not included in the program! The material is updated constantly. Current examples include the Democrats' plan to defeat the deficit (Return to Spenders) and the Republicans take on health care reform (We've Got a Lot of Livers To Do). In fact, The Capitol Steps can honestly claim to be the show that features both political parties' nominees to be onstage singing show tunes. If you're still sitting on the political fence after seeing this show...then you're probably in a lot of pain. But no matter who or what is in the headlines, you can bet the Capitol Steps will tackle all things equally foolish.

Be there in Baltimore as this wildly-funny, clever and inventive group brings the ISM Annual Conference to a close.
