Is it safe to post my résumé online?

It is relatively safe to post your résumé online if you use caution and good sense.

Unfortunately, from time to time, fake job postings do appear in the ISM Career Center, and it is believed these postings are used as a means of collecting personal information from job seekers. This practice (fake job postings) is against ISM Career Center policy and ISM does not condone this practice.

ISM encourages its job seekers to practice safe job searching techniques:

  1. Never give out your social security number to online "prospective employers"
  2. Never provide any personal, non-work related information online (such as religous affiliation, marital status, physical description)
  3. Never provide bank account information or credit card numbers to prospective employers online. Jobs posted in the ISM Career Center are "fee free" job opportunities and you should never be charged any fees by the prospective employer.
  4. Use caution when dealing with prospective employers from outside your own country
  5. Always do your research on any prospective employer

Note: If you feel you have been the victim of Internet fraud, please contact the Internet Fraud Complaint Center. The Internet Fraud Complaint Center (IFCC) is a partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C). IFCC's mission is to address fraud committed over the Internet. For victims of Internet fraud, IFCC provides a convenient and easy-to-use reporting mechanism that alerts authorities of a suspected criminal or civil violation.

In an effort to help create a safer online environment, ISM Job Seekers now have the option of posting "confidential" resumes. This means your contact information will not be visible to the public. Potential employers will be able to contact you through the ISM Career Center Message Center which will route the e-mail message to your "Profile." You will be notified by e-mail that you have a message waiting for you in the ISM Message Center. You may correspond with the potential employer confidentially in the ISM Message Center until you decide you would like to pursue the job opportunity.

How do I edit my résumé?

To edit your résumé, first log-in to your Profile. Next select the button titled 'Your Résumé'. That link will allow you to add a new résumé or update your current online résumé. You will also be able to upload (attach) a Rich Text Document (.rtf). A Rich Text Document allows you to have a specially formatted résumé online that prospective employers can download. Note: Attached .rtf résumés are not searchable.

How do I attach my résumé as a Rich Text Document?

To attach your résumé as a Rich Text Document, first log-in to your Profile. Then select the button titled 'Your Résumé'. Scroll to the bottom of this page. What is .rtf?

".rtf" stands for Rich Text Format. Using this format for your résumé will allow for special formatting (bold, italics, bullets). To save your résumé in Rich Text Format, open your file in Word, select Save As, choose Rich Text Format, and click Save. The ISM Career Center system will only accept files with the .rtf extension, not .doc or .wpd (Word Perfect Document).

How long will my résumé remain active?

If you activate your résumé it will remain active for 90 days. The system will automatically send an e-mail to you two weeks prior to the end of those 90 days if you have not updated your résumé within those 90 days. The system is checking to make certain you still want your résumé active in the ISM Career Center system. To keep your résumé active, just review your résumé; if it's current and no changes need to be made, just click on the Edit Your Résumé button. This will extend your résumé for an additional 90 days. Note: Your résumé will not be deleted, just deactivated. You can reactivate your résumé at any time by selecting the Activate Résumé option at the bottom of your résumé template.

What are cookies and why do I need them?

Cookies are a small piece of text that your browser uses to remember information about a Web site. If a cookie is written to your system by a Web site, that information is passed on to the Web site the next time you return to that site.

How Does ISM's Web Site Use Cookies?

ISM uses cookies for two reasons:

  1. One reason is to verify that you are a current member when you go to pages that are for members only. Each time you access a page in these areas, you are asked for your ISM ID number and last name. Instead of bringing up the form for this information, the pages ask for the cookie that already has this information. If you have already submitted it once during your session, you do not have to submit it again until you log off of the Internet and return to areas of the ISM Web site that are for members only.

  2. The other reason is so you don't have to re-enter your ISM ID number and last name, or Username and Password, every time you return to areas of the site that require you to log-in. When you return to these areas, you will notice the form for entering your ISM ID number and last name, or Username and Password, are already filled out — all you have to do is hit the "Login" button without rekeying any information.

The only information used in the cookies is your ISM ID number and your last name, or your Username and Password; no other information is collected. This information is not used for any other purposes than the ones listed above, and is not sold to any other organizations or individuals.

You need to have your computer's setting set to "enable" or "allow" cookies in order to use ISM's Career Center.

I found a job, now what?

Congratulations on securing a new job!

You will probably want to deactivate your résumé so you no longer receive interview requests. Also, if you've enabled the Job notification system in your Profile, you may wish to disable this option so you are not bothered by further e-mails.

Send us an e-mail and let us know about your job search experience on the ISM Career Center. We'd love to hear your comments and/or suggestions.

Remember: If you are a non-member Job Seeker you may return to the Career Center services at anytime within your annual subscription timeframe to reactivate your résumé and begin reusing the services.

If you are an ISM Member you may use the ISM Career Center anytime as long as your ISM membership is current.

Why should I post on the ISM Career Center?

The Institute for Supply Management™ (ISM) is a national and international leader in supply management research and education. Since its inception in 1915, ISM has been, and continues to be, the leading organization for purchasing and supply management professionals. ISM's membership base includes more than 40,000 supply management professionals.

Supply management includes the traditional purchasing process — and a lot more. Supply managers make decisions each day about logistics, e-business processes, support systems, source selection, relationship management, contracts, operations, resource allocation, and risk management. Strategic planning and daily implementation to contribute toward greater effectiveness in total resource management are critical roles for today's supply manager. The word "supply" captures the breadth and depth of the new and expanded role of the ISM member.

The ISM Career Center Web site communicates your employment opportunities to a select, highly qualified group of supply management professionals. This group is committed to furthering their professional development through their membership in ISM, certification (CPSM & C.P.M.) and accreditation (A.P.P.), and continuing education.
