Your Chance to Interview Dave Barry! (Well, Kind Of)

Posted 04-21-2010 at 07:54 PM by 95th Annual
Next week, at ISM’s annual Conference (, I’ll have the chance to meet and interview one of my favorite writers, Dave Barry, who will be delivering the closing keynote speech. Before I do, I want to know what YOU would ask him if you had the chance.

A little background:

For almost any writer, this whole thing is like meeting a rock star … which, actually, he *also* kind of is. ( Personally, I’ve been a fan of his writing since high school, when my dad showed me one of Barry’s weekly newspaper columns about a less-than-innovative beached-whale removal by the Oregon State Highway Division. (

Since then, I’ve added no fewer than eight of Barry’s books to my shelves. Among the favorites:

• "Dave Barry in Cyberspace," which introduced me to buying and setting up a computer (“Step One: Get Valium”) and becoming computer literate (“Or: Words for Nerds”).

• "Dave Barry Is From Mars and Venus," a book of Barry’s essays which explore, among other important topics, his Synchronized Swimming Media Challenge experience wherein he failed to master the “eggbeater” maneuver.

• "Dave Barry’s Gift Guide to End All Gift Guides," which led me to consider, reconsider and, finally, reject (albeit reluctantly) the notion of giving my loved ones IRS Christmas tree ornaments and head lice coloring books for the holidays.

He’s hilarious, but he’s also an excellent writer. In fact, in 1988, he won the Pulitzer Prize for Commentary — although, according to his official website, “many people are still trying to figure out how this happened.”

The point is this: Left to my own devices, I could come up with plenty of questions. But, this isn’t about me. It’s about you, the ISM members and readers of "Inside Supply Management®," where the interview will be published in a future issue.

So, if you could ask Dave Barry a question, what would it be? I just might relay it for you.
