FOR RELEASE: May 9, 2013
TEMPE, Ariz. (May 9, 2013) — Lisa Martin, CPSM, C.P.M., is the 2013 J. Shipman Gold Medal Award recipient. Institute for Supply Management™ (ISM) presented the award to Martin at a recognition lunch in Dallas/Ft. Worth during ISM's 98th Annual International Supply Management Conference and Educational Exhibit. Martin is senior vice president and chief procurement officer for Teva Pharmaceuticals, a global pharmaceutical company based in Israel. She also currently serves as a member of the ISM Board of Directors and from 2007 to 2009 served as Board Chair.
The J. Shipman Gold Medal Award was created by the Purchasing Management Association of New York in 1931, and is awarded annually to an individual who has performed distinguished service for the cause and advancement of the supply management profession. To date, Martin is only the second woman to be honored with the J. Shipman Award.
As she begins her position as senior vice president and chief procurement officer for Teva Pharmaceuticals, Martin is energized by the future possibilities of her new position. She looks forward to establishing processes, systems and procedures to bring data visibility to Teva's forward-thinking organization. Her objective is to build a best-in-class function that delivers continuous value to the company.
Martin is the former senior vice president, Pfizer Worldwide Procurement and Operations. As Pfizer's chief procurement officer and global operations leader, Martin and her organization supported all externally purchased goods and services categories across each business line. Martin led a broad array of functional areas, including real estate for Pfizer's global site portfolio and facilities management at Pfizer's commercial and research and development sites. She also led Pfizer's Corporate Services, such as fleet and the global travel program. In addition to leading the development and implementation of sourcing strategies that leverage Pfizer's US$18 billion spend, Martin championed Pfizer's supplier diversity programs.
Martin joined Pfizer from Warner Lambert in 2000, where she was vice president, procurement. Her career also includes management positions at Sony Pictures Entertainment, Columbia Pictures Entertainment and NBC.
Martin credits her membership to NAPM—Los Angeles (now the ISM—Los Angeles, Inc. affiliate) and several mentors who helped her recognize the profession she would become deeply passionate about.
"What I like about procurement, and what I still like, is that it gives you a very unique vantage point to understand how all the parts of a company work," she said. "I love the analytical aspect, the strategy part. But most of all I love the psychology of it."
One of Martin's proudest accomplishments is that many of her past colleagues have gone on to become successful CPOs in their own right. Additionally, she serves on the executive committee of Junior Achievement of New York (JANY), as well as the board and executive committee of the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC). Martin earned a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, in communications and psychology from Long Island University, C.W. Post College, New York.
