  • 2012 Sustainability Leadership Report  This reports provides high-level findings of the second annual global study of how 100 of the world's largest corporations are perceived to be performing against environment, social and governance (ESG) factors. ISM Supported the 2012 study as well as the inaugural Corporate Sustainability Brand Perception Survey conducted in 2011 by BrandLogic and CRD Analytics.

  • ISM Member Exclusive 2012 Sustainability Leadership Report: A supplemental look at perceptions among purchasing professionals (November 9, 2012)  Prepared exclusively for ISM, this report provides an understanding of how average perceptions change among different sub-groups of ISM members who participated in the 2012 Corporate Sustainability Brand Perception Survey study. It also shows how ISM respondents' ratings on ESG dimensions compare to those of other respondent groups. This report is available only to ISM members.   • Carbon Disclosure Project Supply Chain Report 2010, This report, produced by A.T. Kearney and the Carbon Disclosure Project, details climate change information provided by Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) member companies and their 710 suppliers. Suppliers provided information about greenhouse gas emissions and reduction targets, governance and assessment of risk, and opportunities associated with climate change.

  • Supply Management's Strategic Role in Environmental Practices (CAPS Research, 2008. Access to full report requires log-in to the CAPS Web site.) Most companies realize that environmental sustainability performance is a critical issue. Fortunately, the supply management function has the opportunity to engage heavily in these programs, but many professionals are unsure of what their role might be for strategic contribution. This study, by Thomas F. Gattiker, Ph.D., Wendy Tate, Ph.D., and Craig R. Carter, Ph.D., is based on a series of focus group interviews. It provides guidance for those wanting to implement environmental practices within their organizations and supply management strategies.

  • "Green" Corporate Strategies: Issues and Implementation From the Supply Management Perspective (CAPS Research, 2008. Access to full report requires log-in to the CAPS Web site.) Sustainability and "green" business practices have become the hot topic in today's business climate. Yet, many firms are struggling to uncover what "green" and "sustainable" actually mean in terms of their operations and objectives. A group of supply executives attending a CAPS Research Critical Issues conference on this topic discussed a framework for the way in which companies will address green issues from a supply management perspective. This report delves into some of the definitions used, the drivers for such initiatives, the business case for green, and recommendations for establishing internal and external strategies. It also includes a case study from The Auto Club Group and several Internet resources for further information.

  • Process Guide for Supply Management Environmental Sustainability (CAPS Research, 2008. Access to full report requires log-in to the CAPS Web site.) Many firms are seeking universally accepted models for environmental sustainability programs. Unfortunately, few exist. As an immediate aid to supply managers and as a precursor to creating industry-specific benchmarks for environmental sustainability, this brief guide to initiating a program for supply management environmental sustainability can serve as a starting point. It is the result of various interviews and in-depth discussions with supply management executives from CAPS Research sponsoring companies and other thought leaders. The report covers five major stages in the environmentally sustainable program creation process, from defining the topic to running a pilot program.

  • Sustainability Impacts Supply Professionals’ Decisions and Supplier Relationships This report contains the results of a survey conducted in late 2007 by the ISM Committee on Sustainability and Social Responsibility to determine the understanding supply management professionals have of what sustainability is and what its impact has been on the supply management profession.

    In their paper, A Framework of Sustainable Supply Chain Management: Moving Toward New Theory (2008), authors Craig R. Carter and Dale S. Rogers of the University of Nevada, College of Business Administration, Reno introduce the concept of sustainability to the field of supply chain management and demonstrate the relationships among environmental, social, and economic performance within a supply chain management context.   • Chain Reaction: Your Firm Cannot be "Sustainable" Unless Your Supply Chains Become Sustainable First reports the findings of an A.T. Kearney and Institute for Supply Management™ (ISM) survey of 25 North American Fortune 100 companies. The corresponding slide deck, "True" and Profitable Sustainability Management: How Supply Management is Key to Fulfilling a Promise illustrates key points from the study.

  • Purchasing's Contribution to the Socially Responsible Management of the Supply Chain (CAPS Research) This CAPS Focus Study contains the results of research conducted in 2000 to identify the activities encompassed within purchasing social responsibility (PSR), as well as the factors that drive PSR, barriers and ways to overcome them, and the outcomes of PSR.

  • Social Responsibility and the Supply Management Profession: A Study of Barriers and Drivers to Ethical Practices This report contains the results of a survey conducted in late 2005 by the ISM Ethical Standards Committee to gain an understanding of what is happening within organizations on the ethics front and draw conclusions to help management be more effective in ensuring ethical behavior.

  • Social Responsibility and the Supply Management Profession: A Baseline Study This study was released by ISM in April 2004 in conjunction with the launch of the ISM Social Responsibility initiative. It reports the results of a large-scale survey of supply managers that measured the baseline level of activity in their organizations relating to ISM’s seven Principles of Social Responsibility.

  • Sustainable Management in Emerging Economy Context is a PDF slide presentation that reports the summary results of a study conducted by the College of Business Administration at the University of Nevada, Reno. The study reports how environmental and social sustainability drives profit, including information on how sustainable management pays off, effective sustainability measures and industry best practices.

  • Telecom Supplier Diversity Task Force Report: Revitalizing the Supplier Diversity Value Proposition through Supply Chain Effectiveness (Full Report [5.7 MB] | Executive Summary) This report, published in 2003 by the Telecom Supplier Diversity Task Force, offers 21 supply chain recommendations to improve supplier diversity programs.
